Basic Computer Skills

If you have ever taken a computer class in college that teaches you, literally, how to copy and paste (step by step even), you are either currently in the same class I am, or you have taken it previously. I don't mind the teacher, and I don't mind the class itself, I just find it slightly redundant to learn the simple things like that. Actually, I thought it was completely crazy at first. However, I went over to my husband's grandparent's house for supper the other night and realized how pertinent these computer skills are to anyone who may not have ever had another opportunity to learn them. You see, Pa has never used a computer and anytime we mention any computer skills to him, he is too stubborn to attempt to make any sense of it. If you don't know how serious this is, let me illustrate a little. Say we pt a computer in front of Pa and asked him to open up the Internet by double-clicking on the icon, he wouldn't even be able to figure out how to turn on the computer.

Pa makes me feel privileged to have the skills that I have, especially when it comes to the computer. I can surf the Internet, create resumes, and many other things that have become important in today's society. With the fast-paced society, it's amazing how stubborn people can be about change. I just hope that I can continue to keep up with the changes and not become as stubborn as Pa. I am stubborn, but I believe that my stubbornness has more sustenance to it.

Now, I not only see the importance of learning to copy and paste, but I also see how important it is to be in-step with the changing society.

  1. I am from California (don't hate me because of this) and I have been using a computer since the early '90's. I moved here 1 & 1/2 years ago and one of my biggest frustrations in the workplace is that the majority of the people above me have very little or even no understanding of how to use a computer. Many fear change or try to dwell on downsides of computers. As you have pointed out, we will continue on this electronic path and we all eventually have to cope. The more you learn and the more open you are to technological advances, the more valuable you will be as an employee. I know Pa doesn't have to worry about any of that, but you and I do. I enjoyed your post and look forward to more.

  2. I agree that the computer age is in need of improvement. Althought I do understanding why some people still have no idea what they are doing a computer. I was in school in the times when computer what hitting the high points starting to be needed in all work places school and for lesure the older generations had no need for them. So in time I believe every one will have the common computer skill you talk of.
